Blog #7

I learned a lot about how to put together an effective video that successfully communicates a message, whether the message be about the community or the whole earth. Alex and John really helped me with the analysis portion of media, while the re-watching the old psas really gave me the idea and how to film and the variety of shots that are needed. I think the most challenging part was probably planning out everything and editing. I think its pretty good overall. Maybe more notice on the blog posts. It was fun overall.

Yes, it sends the message perfectly without sound as well as with. I think its simple and easy to decipher yet still gets the message across well. I think kids our age can relate to the psa and what goes on in it, because at times i find myself overwhelmed by all my work and all the books and projects being juggled at once. The story is well constructed, gives the viewer a good perspective.I think it will be a great psa overall.

Im relativly statisfied with our draft, thought it definently could be better. Im satisfied because the scenes we have done are really good and worked really well. They were pretty spot on and even our spontaneous ideas and additions ended up working well with our general idea. The only problems we really have is the fact we dont have all the scenes done. But we do have them all planned and know what were going to do when we get the camera. So even with the negative there is a positive. The rough draft analysis will clean up our psa and then we can tailor any scenes we're going to do in the future and hopefully help them reach expectations.

Falling Polar Bears

Were doing a good part of what is said to be effective, such as the part about not needing volume to still send the message, and that it hopefully grabs the attention of teens and people with constant links to high school life. We could work on making the message powerful to the point where people want to jump out of their chairs and go out push for our message. Our PSA will be effective because of our intended audience and that our message applies so strongly to that audience, also, i think it will be effective in showing how schools need to update themselves with our modern society.

Our group is currently planning all of are shots and our locations for those shots. Our story board have given us a good idea of the possible angles and kinds of shots were going to want to do to emphasize all the right things in our video. We are also in the process of planning all of our audio, and when to have generic music and when to just have the ambients of the local setting. Were also trying to find a way to get a school bus to utilize, whether that be by using one in the morning before school or calling and seeing if someone would help us out for a little while. Overall i think our timeline and general shot ideas are pretty solidified, we just need to figure out all the actual shooting conditions we want for the video. Figuring that out seems to be our current hurdle.

Planning the shots, its been hard to decide what too do with angles and whatnot to emphasize the right thing and make our message clear. Its hard to get all the details and what not right. Its a lot harder as a process than i thought it would be. The storyboard really helped wih this though, which is good.

I think our pitch went really well, we kept it relaxed and kind of theatrical and it felt like the message got through. But, we did miss some important details that would have helped with the feel and message of the psa. Overall i think we did really good. Our message is very much in the communities interst, partly because it pertains specifically to south high and high school. Its in the interests of students teachers and the administration. Our target audience is those involved in high school, not just the kids, we want to show the adults too that his is a good idea! Our style will appeal strongly to the students and also make teachers hink about how they teach their classes.

PSAs are kind of there today to remind of social and legal boundaries and to remind you to follow these guidlines. Some possible topics for our psa were the routine things like drunk driving and whatnot, but once we came upon our current idea we were set. Our idea about electronics in the schools was good and original, and well thought out. Were planning on making a psa that supports using electronics at certain times an for certain things in school. I helped come up with how to convey how to show how to use electronics well in school, such as using it for a planner for example.

An Effective Ad Campaign

An effective ad campaign in my opinion is the Truth ads about the real harms of cigarettes. Its effective cause they can pull you in with things that make you think, such as the Shards O Glass Pops, which at first seems like a normal ad but then as you realize what they are advertise, it makes you say "what?" Also i love the message they're sending about how cigarettes kill and are in no way a positive in our modern society. Advertising tries to tell us what we need or what is cool to buy. Sometimes they try to make there things seem like the hip or cool thing too buy, and sometimes they try to get you to buy it by trying to make it seem like its something you really need in life. But I'm relatively sure everyone will be okay with out a "Snuggie" in their homes.

MTN and My Visual Critique

The MTN presentations have really helped me see how in depth you have to go to fully analyze a visual work, whether it be a PSA, segment of a movie or just plain TV. They showed me how certain angles can add strength or magnitude to a shot, such as a close up on a crying parent or a medium shot of someone smashing up a room. I also learned kind of how to show your location using the long shot to establish your location. Also that using a good amount of variation and shots to get across one thing or action is good. For my visual assessment i plan on using a PSA i recently saw on TV about teens needing to buckle up. I think media literacy is important so we can interpret the flurry of visual information better, because today there is so much on television that can confuse and become misinterpreted. It might also help us tell the lies and false information sometimes pushed upon people from the things people really ought to know and be aware of.
